Sometimes when I am introduced to someone through one of my students, they mention that I am their Tai chi teacher. The reactions are quite varied! Some are very enthusiastic and end up joining us for class, others nod in a friendly way, and quite a few just look confused. They have maybe heard about it, but really have no idea what it is all about. The curious ask, “Why Tai Chi?”
The best answer is that it feels good! There is a huge depth and history to the art which make a truly
complete answer impossible in anything less than a book of several hundred pages, and even then it
would be limited compared to the reality of the whole discipline. But what is interesting to a new
student is: What do I get out of it?
You will feel better; you will be more powerful.
The first benefit is physical, and covers several aspects. There is a long list of conditions which are
improved through the practice of Tai Chi, during which physical changes to the body occur. Reduction in pain and ease of movement can be experienced almost immediately, and strength and balance develop soon after. The high degree of improvement to the body compared to the low degree of effort seem unlikely, but the slow, smooth practice of martial movements conditions the body and regulates the breath in ways which encourage confidence and awareness which allow you to move through your day feeling good about yourself and able to focus on your surroundings. The ability to move the whole body as a unit make you powerful.
The next improvement is energetic. The internal art of Tai Chi encourages a posture, rhythm, and state of body, breath, and mind which allow energy to be utilized towards body functions rather than stress and tensions. In addition, Tai Chi is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine due to the effect of improved chi flow through the meridians, which in the paradigm of TCM facilitates health and healing.
The augmentation of energy through reduction of stress not only allows for more enjoyment and
productivity, but also supports lifestyle changes which reduce symptoms of several chronic conditions
related to constant tension and strain on the body. With practice you can direct this energy flow for
maximum benefit. The free access to energy flow throughout the whole body makes you powerful.
Another positive result revolves around the mind. The practice of awareness and sensory exercises
permit a better understanding of yourself, your surroundings, and of others around you. The meditative methods utilized alone and also during the qigong or chuan sets actually change your brain waves in very therapeutic ways which allow your mind to release limiting tension, worries, and stress, allowing for expanded mental function. The sharp uncluttered mind perceives and reacts in conjunction with the body and energy just as it was intended: powerfully!
